SCCC BENEFIT NIGHT RAISES $500 FOR GREENSBURG RELIEF FUND

October 27, 2007

LIBERAL, Kansas- The Seward County Community College athletic department has announced that the 2007 Saints Bookstore Basketball Benefit Night raised $500 that will be donated to the Greensburg Relief Fund. SCCC basketball fans gathered at the Green House on Thursday, Oct. 25, to watch the Saints and Lady Saints basketball teams in action, along with contests, competitions, performances and team scrimmages throughout the night.

The Basketball Benefit Night went to support the Greensburg, Kansas Relief Fund. On May 4, 2007, Greensburg suffered one of the most horrific tornados to ever land in the state of Kansas. The tornado was measured as an EF-5 by the National Weather Service – the largest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale and the first in Kansas since the new scale was implemented. The tornado was 1.7 miles wide and was on the ground for 22 miles non-stop for 30 minutes. Maximum winds were estimated at 205 miles per hour. It was the first fatal storm in southwest Kansas since 1967.

Current City of Greensburg Administrative Assistant, and former SCCC student-athlete, Stacy Barnes was in attendance for the Seward County Community College athletic department’s presentation. SCCC president Dr. Duane Dunn and SCCC athletic director Galen McSpadden were on hand to present Stacy with the certificate.

The SCCC men’s and women’s basketball teams put on a basketball preview where both teams competed in a five-on-five three point contest, coaches free-throw contest, 12 minute inter-squad scrimmage and a four player men’s basketball slam dunk contest. The SCCC fans also saw the first performance of the SCCC Cheer & Dance teams. In addition, contests throughout the night included games for the local youth and SCCC students.

The SCCC athletic department would like to thank the Saints Bookstore, all of the fans in attendance and to all of those who helped raise funds for this very important event.
